Timber fences, retaining walls, landscaping, stored timber and old form work left in place, posts and poles are critical in the management of termite. Outdoor timber is the nursery of termites and they can enter your home from them. Successful Termite Control is dependent on effective management of timbers in the yard.

There are timbers that are more durable against natures attack. There are two categories , natural and artificially treated.

Natural Resistance

The natural timbers are from types of trees that are generally hardwood trees. Some soft wood trees are resistant to termites but are limited in use.

Iron bark is excellent for termite / white ant and general durability . Only the heart wood is useful against termite / white ant attack. The bark and sap wood is vulnerable unless treated first.

Cypress pine can also be very good for termite / white ant resistant . Usually used for flooring it has proven resistance. As with iron bark the sap wood and bark is less resistant. (In my experience the bark is not resistant, it is sold as termite resistant but I have seen it full of termites / white ants many times.)

Treated Timber

Treated timber is recommended and regulated for use in outdoor situations and any contact with soil. How long it lasts depends on the type of timber, weather and drainage .Some organisms that attack the timber are termites / white ants, fungi ( wood rots), mould, borers and a variety of bacteria and insects.

Best things to do to protect timber is keep all timber clear of the soil. If timber poles are used be sure to have them treated with a Termite treatment to protect them once installed.

A common house brick is all that is needed to keep stored timber safely off the soil.

Termite treatments are very effective in Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Ipswich. South East Queensland has some of the most destructive and aggressive termites / white ants in the world.

An annual termite / white ant inspection is recommended by The Australian Standards as Termites can move in and cause damage quite quickly and inspections longer than a year could see you unknowingly harbouring termites and damage being caused to your home.
